Observation Narrative |
Community Type: non-tidal floodplain forest
General Description: Floodplain forest on a terrace on the N bank of the Salem R, W of Rt 40/45, in Woodstown, NJ. The terrace is ~1 m above stream (at time of visit) and slopes to stream. Inland from the stream, terrace runs almost level to a shallow swale. There is then a slight rise, then a steep slope up to a cemetery. Vegetation on entire terrace is fairly uniform. Dominant trees are Acer negundo and Fraxinus pensylvanica with some A. saccharinum and A. platanoides, Juglans nigra, Platanus occidentalis, and Carya spp. Shrub layer is largely Linder benzoin. Evidence of recent flooding is scant, but there is some water-carried wood and debris in places. There is no sign of recent human disturbance except for use of streambank by fishermen. Soil is silty clay over clayey sand, becoming saturated at about 115 cm. Invasive plant species are common and include Euonymus fortunei, Allaria petiolata, Lysimachia nummularia, and Glechoma hederacea.;
Community Description: Nearly flat floodplain forest community along the N bank of the Salem R. Forest is dominated by Acer spp. (negundo, saccharinum, platanoides) and Fraxinus spp. (americana, pensylvanica) with significant amounts of other tree species present (Juglans nigra, Platanus occidentalis, Ulmus americana, Carya spp.). Tall shrub layer is dense and is nearly 100% Lindera benzoin, beneath which is a variable forb layer, comprised of mostly invasive species. Evidence of flooding is seen around some tree bases (collected sticks and debris), and deposits of sand are found near the stream edge. Easrthworm casings are abundant in the plot - they are found elsewhere in the floodplain but not everywhere. Soil is dark brown silty clay (10 YR 3/2) to a depth of ~85 cm, with red mottles starting at about 37 cm depth. Below that is dark grayish brown (10 YR 4/2) sand to the limit of the auger (about 4'). The last few inches of sand are saturated. Disturbance is limited to a fishermen's path and streamside clearings for fishing.;
Vegetative Homogeneity: good mixture of trees
Evidence of Community Processes: Flooding - wood and debris piled at bases of some trees, sand and pebble deposits near stream banks.;
Garter snake present.
