Community Type: non-tidal floodplain forest
General Description: Floodplain forest on a more or less flat terrace on the west (south) bank of the Salem R, about 3' above water levell at the time of visit. Stream bank is almost vertical. Forest is bordered on the W by a Acer rubrum-dominated swamp, at the base of a steep slope up to a farm field. Dominant trees include Fraxinus pensylvanica and Acer negundo, with some A. rubrum and large Gleditsia triacanthos. Shrubs include Lindera benzoin and Viburnum dentatum. Polemonium reptans and Laportea canadensis are characteristic forbs. There is abundant evidence of recent flooding, including flood debris. Deposits of mud and sand, and recently scoured drainage channels. There is little human disturbance, i.e., no trails or trash. Invasive species include Lysimachia nummularia, Allaria petiolata, and Lonicera japonica. Soils are reddish brown loam and clay. Water table is at 77 cm.;
Vegetative Homogeneity: good variety of trees and forbs
Evidence of Community Processes: There is abundant evidence of recent flooding, in the form of flood-borne debris. Deposits of sediment, and residual mud in channels leading from the stream.
