Observation Narrative ? Community Type: non-tidal floodplain forest General Description: Floodplain forest elevated about two meters above stream, on a relatively flat terrace. Dominant trees are Acer saccharum and Quercus alba, with some Fagus grandifolia, Acer rubrum and Fraxinus americana. Very few shrubs - some Euonymus alatus, some Berberis thunbergii, and an unidentifiable Aronia. Herbs include Fraxinus and Acer seedlings, Allium canadense, Cardamine concatenata, Claytonia virginica, and several species of Carex. There is no sign of recent flooding and no obvious human disturbance.; Community Description: Acer saccharum - Quercus alba dominated floodplain lying ~2m above the level of Stony Brook to the E and mesic woods to the W. There is no evidence of recent flooding. Stream is shallow and slow-moving with a pebbly bottom. Plot lies on a nearly flat terrace, which gradually steps up in small increments on the landward side. Beneath a 6 cm layer of leaf litter and organic matter, soil is silty clay loam 5 YR 4/2, pH 4.6, to a depth of ~ 83 cm, where it becomes somewhat sandy. Floodplain has very few shrubs (none native) and a sparse forb layer (which is mostly graminoids). In the areas where there is sunlight penetration, the forbs are thicker.; General Comments: Unusual - no shrub layer. Stream may have been damned upstream - very low flow. Few forbs.; Bullfrog, oriole, red eyed vireo, flicker, wood peewee, white-tailed deer present.
