Community Type: calcareous sinkhole pond
General Description: This open, graminoid dominated herbaceous community occurs on flat to gently sloping bottoms or moats of calcareous sinkhole ponds. It occurs primarily on Allentown Dolomite with glacial outwash (kettle) surficial deposits. Occasionally it occurs in solution sinkholes on Epler Rickenbach Dolomite with glacial till/bedrock complex surficial deposits. Generally, soils are muck, rarely silty clay or silt marl, and overlay clay, sandy clay, shell marl, peat or bedrock. They are wet, very wet or periodically inundated, and very poorly drained. This community is seasonally flooded and has a hydroperiod range of 10-30 weeks, averaging 12-14 weeks. Slope is flat to gentle or occasionally moderate. Aspect is flat, or occasionally west, northwest, north, northeast, or southeast. This community is most often found in a mosaic with other herbaceous communities such as Ranunculus flabellaris – Pilea pumila - Polygonum amphibium, Boehmeria cylindrica – Carex lupulina, Schoenoplectus acutus or Phalaris arundinacea marsh, and Cephalanthus occidentalis shrubland.
Other associated species present but not in plot: Boltonia (rosette).
