Community Type: calcareous sinkhole pond
General Description: This open, graminoid marsh community is restricted to calcareous wetlands in the northeastern United States. It occurs on deep organic deposits on the shores and flats of calcareous sinkhole ponds in the Valley and Ridge Physiographic Province of northwestern New Jersey. The community occurs in glacial outwash (kettles) on Allentown Dolomite or Epler-Richenbach Dolomite bedrock. Soils are deep muck or silty clay over peat or silt, wet to very wet, and very poorly drained. This community is seasonally to semipermanently flooded and has a hydroperiod range of 12-16 weeks, averaging 14-16 weeks. Slope is flat. Aspect is flat. Elevation range is 594 to 600 feet above mean sea level. This community is most often found in a mosaic with Leersia oryzoides – Sparganium chlorocarpum –Polygonum amphibium, Phalaris arundinacea marsh and Cephalanthus occidentalis shrubland.
Other associated species present but not in plot: Boltonia, Polygonum amphibium.
Deer trail is present.
