Community Type: calcareous sinkhole pond
General Description: The majority of buttonbush swamps occur in semipermanently flooded conditions, not in seasonally flooded ephemeral ponds. In the Valley and Ridge Physiographic Province of northwestern New Jersey this shrubland occurs on the flat bottom of calcareous sinkhole ponds that have deep organic deposits. The community occurs in both solution sinkholes and glacial kettles that developed Allentown Dolomite and Epler-Rickenbach Dolomite (Lower Beekmantown) bedrock with glacial till/bedrock complex or glacial outwash surficial deposits. Soils are deep deposits of muck over marly peat, are wet to very wet and very poorly drained. The soil pH ranges from 6.0-7.6. The organic soils are saturated, with passive seasonal flooding occurring during the late winter and early spring as ground-water fills the ponds through springs and seepage fissures in the bedrock. Ground water levels drop in the summer and often remain at or near the surface of the swamp. The hydroperiod ranges from 10 to 30 weeks with an average of 12-14 weeks. This shrubland community is often found in the center or around the periphery of sinkhole ponds in a mosaic with Acer x freemanii - Fraxinus (pennsylvanica, nigra) / Ilex verticillata / Osmunda regalis Woodland and Phalaris arundinacea Herbaceous Vegetation, with Ranunculus flabellaris – Pilea pumila – Polygonum amphibium Herbaceous Vegetation in the moat.
Other associated species present but not in plot: Carex retrorsa.
