Observation Narrative ? Community Type: sea level fen Community Description: Located in the middle of a salt marsh on a slightly elevated "island" approximately 1000' from the tree line of woods adjoining salt marsh. Fen is shrubby in some spots and densely vegetated. A freshwater lens is probably located beneath the site. A copse of trees and shrubs, mostly Liquidambar-Acer rubrum-Vaccinium corymbosum is found on the highest ground to the east. Fen is irregularly shaped, densely vegetated by graminoids and forbs, especially Cladium mariscoides, Panicum virgatum, Eleocharis rostellata with large patches of Tripsacum dactyloides. Some Spartina pectinata. More Spartina patens is found in this fen than others probably because of its location. A built up dirt road bed passes through the trees to the east, probably an old salt hay road. Soil is peat (9 cm) over loamy sand, becoming saturated at about 45 cm, with much marbling of the soil below the saturation point. A band of clay is found at 80 cm. No recent disturbance or evidence of flooding. Occassional low-lying swales and depressions found within the fen are vegetated exclusively by halophytes like Distichlis spicata and Spartina patens with Hibiscus moscheutos.
