Community Type: tidal freshwater marsh
Community Description: Part of the Hamilton-Trenton marsh complex - located at the base of a long mesic slope. At the lowest level, forest grades into a narrow band of swamp. These abruptly end at the edge of the marsh. Swamp which lies to the S, has a good variety of woody species for such a small area. Marsh itself is dominated by Acorus calamus, with some Nuphar advena beneath it, and has a thick layer of Polygonum arifolium sprawling on top. Old Acorus stems have died back and are covered by Polygonum. New stems are emerging and are about 6-10" high. A zone of very soft mud lies between the edge of the swamp and the vegetated zone of the marsh. Vegetation and downed wood are coated with dried mud from tidal activity. A winding channel which connects Crosswicks Creek has Zizania along both edges; occasional patches of Phalaris are scattered. Site is undisturbed.
