Community Type: tidal freshwater marsh
Community Description: Diverse high tidal marsh on (relatively) firm ground located within a U-shaped parcel of mesic woods to the S and W. A raised dike/road forms the eastern edge. To the N is a small island of trees/shrubs. Plot vegetation is multi-layered with Sagitaria, Peltandra and Pilea growing beneath taller Acorus, Bidens, Amaranthus and Scirpus fluviatilis. Polygonum arifolium crawls over much of the lower strata. Tidal inundation is evident. Soil is muck over less decomposed organic matter and is very sloppy but reasonably firm at this site. Marsh is a mosaic with stands of Zizania, Phragmites and Nuphar elsewhere. Where Zizania and Nuphar are growing, walking is very difficult. No disturbance at this site which is well enough protected that is it devoid of washed-up trash. Part of Hamilton-Trenton marsh complex.
Fauna: spring peepers
