Community Type: tidal freshwater marsh
General Vegetation/Habitat Description: Fresh water tidal marsh on a peninsula formed by a bend in the Great Egg Harbor River. Drainage is generally N and S from Dannenhauer Lane, which is a high point. Mostly bare mud at date of survey, but identifiable plant species included Carex sp. [possibly, stricta], Typha latifolia, Hibiscus moscheutos, Polygonum sagittatum, Chamaedaphne calyculata, Osmunda regalis, Hypericum densiflorum. Around edges are such species as Rhododendron viscosum, Ilex glabra, Alnus serrulata, Leucothoe racemosa. Marsh is broken up and bordered by flood plain forest. There is little sign of disturbance and surprisingly little trash or flood-borne, human created debris.
Community Description: Mosaic - emergents, forbs and graminoids in large patches or mixed. Convoluted upper margin - trees - Acer rubrum, Magnolia, Nyssa, Chamaecyparis; road on low levee bisects marsh - upper edges densely shrubby. Wide variety of wetland shrubs, below shrubs are patches of graminoids and forbs, especially Gratiola - forms a dense mat in some places. Lowest spots are emergents or bare mud with small channels.
