Observation Narrative ? Community Type: tidal freshwater marsh General Vegetation/Habitat Description: Well delineated zonation is evident in this (probably) infrequently flooded tidal marsh. Freshwater discharge from adjacent cedar forest and the narrow bridge opening may prevent a lot of water from flooding it except in very high tides or stream events. Upper edges are graminoid-dominated. Dominant species are Juncus canadensis, Zizania aquatica, and Scirpus spp. Lower, wetter spots are dominated by emergents Peltandra virginica, Pontederia cordata, and Nymphea odorata. Two main channels are evident. They merge with a pool near the bridge. In that deeper water Scirpus subterminalis is abundant. A higher "plateau" in the center of the marsh supports a few shrubs and less flood-tolerant species - graminoids and forbs. This appears to have once been a cedar swamp. Flattened and mud-stained vegetation indicates some flooding, as do high and low water marks on the bridge. No disturbance except for presence of road and bridges. General Community Description: Fresh marsh found on both sides of a stream flooding out of a Chamaecyparis thyoides swamp. Marsh becomes brackish on the other side of the small bridge that spans the stream. Small pools of water support Nympaea odorata. Lower, deep mud is populated by Peltandra and Pontederia. Hummocks, where present, appear to be tree stump remnants. Small shrubs and a variety of forbs grow on them as well as Sphagnum. Graminoides dominate the upper zones near the wood edges. Mud-stained leaves indicate some flooding as do water marks on the bases of grasses. This marsh is probably only tidally flooded during extremely high tides. A large, slightly elevated "island" in the center of the marsh has standing dead cedars, hummocks with shrubs and Carex stricta hummocks and is the most diverse area - probably rarely floods.
