Community Type: tidal freshwater marsh
General Vegetation/Habitat Description: Very wet tidal marsh dominated by emergents Peltandra virginica and Nuphar advena with thick mats of (basal leaves) Rumex verticillata along the landward edges. Phragmites with occasional shrubs (Baccharis, Viburnum dentatum, Rosa multiflora, Amorpha fruticosa) line the shoreline at the land-marsh border. Trees along edge are mostly introduced; Catalpa, Paulownia, Ailanthus. Also present are a few Quercus palustris. Marsh borders a cemetery which dates back many years. There doesn't appear to be any recent disturbance. Soil is black muck, very deep, overlain with a few fallen tree limbs, fallen leaves, and Ceratophyllum demersum, which is lying on the surface of the muck at the time of the survey.
Community Description: Freshwater or oligohaline tidal marsh (probably the former) along small branch of Keasbeys Creek, which runs into the Salem River at Salem. Most of the marshes in this area are disturbed; this one appears undisturbed, but the visible eastern bank is a monoculture of Phragmites, except at the stream edge, which is lined with trees like Paulownia and Ailanthus. At low tide, a narrow main channel runs N-S; on either side are impassable mud flats. In the deeper parts, Nuphar advena forms colonies; then as water becomes progressively shallower, Peltandra dominates. In the highest areas, stands of Rumex verticillata dominate. Ceratophyllum demersum lies stranded on the mud as the tide goes out. Entire marsh is very soft muck and even at low tide, has some standing water. Washed up trash along the edges of the marsh is evidence of flooding.
