Community Type: tidal freshwater marsh
General Vegetation/Habitat Description: Fresh water tidal marsh on N side of N Branch of Rancocas Creek, between creek and surrounding wooded uplands in Rancocas State Park. Marsh is crossed by several small channels. In 19th century, marsh was diked in an unsuccessful attempt to convert it to a pasture. Access trail is on remnant of dike. Dominant vegetation is Zizania aquatica but there are large areas of Polygonum arifolium, Peltandra virginica and Bidens spp. Other than water-borne litter and the remains of the old dike, there is no sign of human disturbance. There does not appear to be any invasive plants - i.e., no Phragmites australis or Lythrum salicaria. Vegetation on dike includes Nyssa sylvatica, Quercus phellos, Betula nigra, Acer rubrum, Clethra alnifolia and Leucothose racemosa.
Community Description: Fresh water tidal marsh on N side of N Branch of Rancocas Creek, between creek and surrounding wooded uplands in Rancocas State Park. Marsh is flat but crossed by several small channels. In 19th century, marsh was diked in an unsuccessful attempt to convert it to a pasture, but the only current evidence of this is a partial raised dike upon which a foot trail runs. The usual tidal range here is about 2 feet, but within the last decade or so, there have been times when water rose 6 feet or more. Other than the dike and some water-borne litter, there is no sign of human disturbance. Soils are dark brown silt and muck.
