Landscape Narrative |
General Landscape Description: Extensive fresh water tidal marshes along Oldmans Creek (border between Gloucester and Salem counties). Zizania aquatica is at least co-dominant with Nuphar advena. Tidal range appears to be several feet - road has water on it during high spring tides. Marsh is crossed by Center Square Road, on a narrow causeway; and bordered on the NW by a railroad on a built-up gravel roadbed.
Evidence of Community Processes: Tidal flow is obvious - range of about 1 meter judging from silt on plant bases, silt on road, depth of channels.
Area of the EO in acres: Approximately 1000 acres

Community Type: tidal freshwater marsh
General Vegetation/Habitat Description: Extensive fresh water tidal marshes along Oldmans Creek (border between Gloucester and Salem counties). Soils appear to be brown silt and mud. Marsh does not appear to be much altered by human activities.
Community Description: Extensive fresh water tidal marshes along Oldmans Creek north of Pedricktown. Marsh is dominated by Zizania aquatica, with Nuphar advena in deeper water and along the numerous channels that cut through the marsh. The marsh is posted with "No Trespassing" signs. There is some water-borne litter; also a few waterfowl hunters' blinds, but otherwise it seems to be relatively pristine. There is a high level of botanical diversity, overall. Site is well-known as a birding location, for shorebirds and waterfowl during spring migration. Pedricktown Rd crosses the marsh on a narrow causeway with a wide ditch on each side.
