Community Type: tidal freshwater marsh
Community Description: Zizania aquatica dominated fresh water tidal marsh located on the E side of Mill Creek at its intersection with Rancocas Creek. To the E, N and NW, the land rises rather steeply uphill to an upland forest lying ~ 10' above the level of the marsh. A dense band of shrubs is found on and at the base of the slope, in some spots with overhanging branches. A narrow band of soft muck and Peltandra lies at the edge of the marsh adjacent to the firm ground. Beyond, dominating the central portion of the marsh, is a thick growth of vigorous Zizania, with some Nuphar advena and occasional scattered stands of Polygonum spp. Much mud-stained trash is washed up onto the marsh and banks. Marsh appears undisturbed, but surrounding forest (Mill Creek Park) shows evidence of filling and dumping. An approximately 1 acre stand of Hedera helix is growing under the trees nearby.
