Observation Narrative |
Community Type: tidal freshwater marsh
Community Description: Observation point is just north of west of plot A1 on Mill Creek on the other side of the creek. Site is accessed behind Willingboro Public Works (with recycling center). A raised path has been built which bisects a U-shaped portion of marsh to the W of the creek. Path has been established for some time. It is lined by smallish (~ 20 year old) sycamores. Among the sycamores lining the path are Clethra, Viburnum and much Amorpha fruticosa, especially at the seaward end. Some Lythrum salicaria also lines the marsh edge along the path. Marsh shows zonation evidenced on the opposite side; a narrow band of deep soft muck with Peltandra follows the edge of the upland woods. The central portion of both lobes is dominated by Zizania aquatica with Nuphar advena found in occasional pockets beneath it. Toward the back of each lobe is a stand of Typha. An interesting feature here is what appears to be a low natural berm which forms a low barrier between the creek and the two lobes of marsh. Species diversity is greatest along these narrow berms with Impatiens, Polygonums, Bidens spp., Lycopus sp., Lythrum salicaria, and Amaranthus cannabinus extending in a N-S line to "close" the lobes.
