Community Type: tidal brackish marsh
General Vegetation/Habitat Description: Fresh edge of predominantly brackish marsh. Marsh is a non-Sphagnous floating mat with scattered hummocks supporting shrubs and forbs. Dominant species is flattened mats of Eleocharis fallax. A nice variety of forbs, ferns and graminoids are present in much lower densities. Marsh is probably flooded intermittently at very high tides and during storm events. To the N, marsh appears to be a monoculture of Spartina cynosuroides. Fresh water discharge probably comes from adjacent Chamaecyparis thyoides swamp. Disturbance - the road bed was built up.
Community Description: Occupies upper edge of brackish marsh - probably only flooded occasionally but is very wet from fresh water discharge originating in adjacent cedar swamp. Community is a floating mat of vegetation. Dominant species is Eleocharis fallax, which is fallen over and matted. Other graminoids and Typha make up most of the cover. Vegetation grades into Spartina cynosuroides going seaward. Small hummocks are dotted with ferns and forbs in the slightly higher zones. Upper edge adjacent to road is populated by common Pine Barrens wetland shrubs. Soil beneath the mat is solid - probably hard sand. Water in footprints is mucky - Sphagnum is present on upper edge.
