Community Type: tidal brackish marsh
Ground Survey Inventory Comments: Multilayered herbaceous layer, much had died back from frost
Community Description: Diverse brackish marsh with several co-dominant species: Spartina alterniflora, S. cynosuroides, Scirpus americanus, Phragmites australis and Typha angustifolia, with healthy amounts of several other species such as Zizania aquatica and Acorus calamus. At the time of the survey, emergent species had died back. Evidence of flooding - washed up debris and water marks on stems. Topography is hummocky. In the vicinity of the plot there are multiple hummocks with Rosa palustris, Thelypteris palustris and forbs growing on them. Soil appears to be poorly decomposed peat with only a little muck; substrate is fairly firm. There is no evidence of recent disturbance. Marsh is located on the west bank of the Wading River.
