Community Type: tidal brackish marsh
Community Description: Upper reaches of a brackish tidal marsh along Turtle Creek, a small tributary of the Wading River. Adjacent to the marsh, to the east is a dirt road, slightly raised, and beyond that, a hydric forest (Acer, Nyssa, Pinus, Juniperus) that grades into an Atlantic white cedar swamp to the north. Good zonation is exhibited along a transect from the road going west into the marsh, where it becomes Phragmites-dominated in the vicinity of a small tidal ditch. The upper edge, closest to the road is Panicum virgatum-dominated with a few shrubs. Going west, the next zone is mostly Distichlis spicata with frequent Typha angustifolia present. This zone grades thin, through dense Scirpus americanus. The Scirpus americanus zone ends abruptly at a wall of Phragmites that borders the tidal ditch. This site was evaluated as a possible sea level fen, possibly in 2004.
