Community Type: tidal brackish marsh
Community Description: Nice piece of brackish tidal marsh located on the south side of Cohansey Creek. This site was treated for Phragmites control a few years ago (pers. comm. from PSE&G manager - Estuary Enhancement Program). Surveyed section is located along an outside curve of an oxbow, so it is narrow at the upper extreme (where a boat ramp is located) and widens as the stream curves away to the east and west. Upland from the marsh are mixed woods, in this section, dominated by oaks (Quercus phellos, Q. stellata, Q. michauxii), hickories (Carya tomentosa, C. pallida), cherry (Prunus serotina) and Juniperus virginiana. Marsh itself is dominated by Spartina alterniflora. Along the stream edge and by the boat ramp are a few stands of Spartina cynosuroides. Amaranthus cannabinus and Aster tenuifolius are present in significant numbers. Soil is black muck, very deep, except near the boat ramp where the footing is firm, probably from added sand. Disturbance is minimal, except for the installation of the boat ramp.
