Community Type: tidal brackish marsh
Community Description: Broad, mucky, hummocky, Spartina alterniflora-dominated brackish tidal marsh located on private property at the end of Loatman Road in Hopewell Township. This section of marsh is bordered by a narrow neck of land (driveway and lawn of private residence) to the north and Cohansey Creek to the south and west. Browns Run, a small creek, runs SW-NE on the NW side of the narrow neck. The upper edge of marsh is dominated by a mixture of Phragmites and Spartina alterniflora with mixed forbs and graminoids. Heading deeper into the marsh, the Phragmites thins after a short distance and ends, giving way to a near monoculture of Spartina alterniflora. Marsh is mucky with hummocks of grass between narrow channels that fill as the tide comes in. Cover in the surveyed area is 80-90%. Property owner states that the marsh was part of a PSE&G project to knock back the Phragmites population. The Phragmites was sprayed, then burned in 1999 and sprayed again in Spring of 2000. The result was a considerable reduction in the Phragmites population, which is now restricted to the upper edges of the marsh, That is the only known recent disturbance. Soil is black muck. Owner also states that the salinity of the marsh is between 5-10 ppt, and the reason Phragmites is persistent at the upper edge is because the owner wouldn't allow spraying close to the house.
