Community Type: tidal brackish marsh
Community Description: Remnant Spartina alterniflora narrow tidal marsh. Land uphill to the SE was filled and is now a stand of Phragmites. A sandy strip of beach, strewn with washed up wood, lies behind and uphill from this small narrow peat bed adjoining the DE River. Peat is about 10 cm thick and shows signs of recent erosion (torn off pieces, exposed roots). A few tiny seeps emanante from the bed and trickle downhill to the river. Vegetation is thick Spartina alterniflora with Lilaeopsis chinensis growing at its base. At the upper edge, behind the peat, a narrow band of Scirpus pungens grows intermittently. This community has declined since last observed in August 2003, probabaly from strong storm tides. Community is too small and fragile to dig for a soil profile.
