Community Type: tidal brackish marsh
Community Description: Remnant brackish tidal marsh on the shore of the DE River. Site is bordered by a rock and riprap jetty of Killcohook NWR to the north, a concrete bulkhead of Fort Mott to the south, and a built-up berm to the east. A narrow sandy beach strip lies between the berm and the marsh. Marsh grows mostly on a peat bed 8-12" thick and is dominated by tall Spartina alterniflora, with Lilaeopsis chinensis beneath. The sandy beach has much wood, logs and trash washed up; among the debris are graminoids (Ammophila breviligulata, Cyperus esculentus, Panicum amarum, Digitaria sp.) and weeds (Cirsium arvense, Artemisia sp., Polygonum perfoliatum, others) and a few natives. Upper beach area has an especially thick layer of debris (from flooding). Site is obviously quite disturbed but not recently. Remarkable that this little peat bed survived.
Fauna: snapping turtle (dead)
