Community Type: tidal brackish marsh
General Description: Oligohaline marsh (fresh along the upper edges) bordered by Rt. 559 to the E and the Great Egg Harbor River to the W. Marsh is dominated by Spartina cynosuroides, but there are also significant amounts of Typha angustifolia, Spartina alterniflora and Scirpus americana present. Along the upper edge, which is shrub-bordered are extensive mats of Agrostis stolonifera. Among and beneath the Agrostis are patches of Hydrocotyle umbellata. Marsh abuptly narrows at the road and a small (fresh) stream flows under the bridge.
Community Description: Upper edge of (presumably) a tidal brackish/oligohaline marsh. Several species are present (not necessarily in the plot) such as Acorus calamus and Decodon verticillatus, are freshwater species. Graminoid-dominated marsh has Spartina alterniflora in lower, regularly flooded zone, and mixed sedges, especially Scirpus spp. in irregularly flooded zones. Upper-most zone appears distinctly fresh. Evidence of tidal flow is evident near the stream edge, where S. alterniflora dominates. Water flowing into the marsh from inland is fresh.
