Observation Narrative ? Community Type: tidal brackish marsh Community Description: Brackish tidal marsh located along the SE side of the Merrygold Branch of the Wading River, just E of Rt. 542. Area surveyed is dominated by Typha angustifolia and Scirpus americanus, either mixed together or pure stands of one or the other. A wide swath of Phragmites lies to the NE and more-or-less encompasses a stand of dead cedars which extends from the eastern treeline. Trees appear to have been killed by fire. A few openings in the dense vegetation are vegetated by low annuals (Aster tenuifolius, Cyperus sp., Samolus parviflorus). Soil is peat with some muck, and is very firm underfoot considering the vegetation types. The only evidence of disturbance is burnt trees. There are no ditches. A thin fringe of trees extending out into the marsh widens to form a small upland island, vegetated by upland Pine Barren species.
