Community Type: interdunal swale
General Description: Low-lying swale - one of a series of interconnected swales separated by walls of shrubs. Saturated. Dominated by Thelypteris palustris. Rosa carolina has colonized W end of swale. Toxicodendron radicans is found scattered throughout. Osmunda regalis and Hibiscus moscheutos is found on hummocks. Thick net of roots covers the surface of the swale.
Community Description: NE-SW-oriented oval/linear depression. One of a series of interconnecting depressions surrounded by shrubs. Dunes lie to the E and W of these wetlands. Other wetlands are mostly similar, a few are wetter and 1 or 2 are being invaded by Phragmites. This may be the site of a blow out during a bad storm. No disturbance. Vegetation is dominated by Thelypteris palustris, which has a thick network of wiry roots. Soil is sand with a few cm of peat and roots on top. Water table is at 7 cm.
