Observation Narrative |
Community Type: interdunal swale
Community Description: Flat-bottomed depression bordered by tall secondary dunes to the north, east and south, and a raised roadbed to the W. Prior to the road being built, this wetland may have extended W to Barnegat Bay. The footing is soft but not deep, and firm underneath. Plant species diversity is low, dominated by Schoenoplectus pungens with significant amounts of Hibiscus moscheutos, Vaccinium macrocarpon, Osmunda regalis and Triadenum virginicus. Deep Sphagnum is found throughout. Shrubs are scattered and often on low hummocks. The greatest diversity is seen near the fringes where it grades into dry upland. No recent disturbance.
