Community Type: Coastal plain intermittent pond
General Description: Coastal plain intermittent pond surrounded by deciduous wooded wetlands and deciduous upland forest at the southern tip of a flat peninsula. Tidal marsh surrounds the peninsula to the west, south and east. Agricultural fields occur to the north. Underlying soil is clay of the Shiloh Marl Member. Phragmites australis Eastern North America Temperate Semi-natural Herbaceous Vegetation occurs throughout the pond except for the very center which is open water. A narrow sparsely vegetated ecotone zone dominated by Lindernia sp., with Echinocloa crusgalli, Panicum dichotomiflorum, Boehmeria cylindrica and Polygonum pennsylvanicum. The pond is surrounded by a 70-100 year-old forest patch dominated by Liquidambar styraciflua, with Nyssa sylvatica, Quercus palustris, Q. phellos, Ilex opaca, Vitis sp., Lonicera japonica, Smilax glauca, Thelypteris palustris, and Boehmeria cylindrica. A small patch of hickory-dominated forest grows to the north, adjacent to a little used road that borders agricultural fields on its northern edge. The site is a preserve owned by PSE&G, protected and open to the public, but swamped by invasive species including Microstegium vimineum and Lonicera japonica. A few walking trails extend into the forest patch from the parking area at its northeast corner.
Community Description: Poor quality herbaceous pondshore community occurring in a coastal plain intermittent pond that may be tidally influenced. Community occurrence is virtually a monoculture of Phragmites australis. Associated species in the upper ecotone pondshore of the pond include Lindernia sp., Echinocloa crusgalli, Panicum dichotomiflorum, Boehmeria cylindrica and Polygonum pennsylvanicum. Full sun to part shade exposure. Muck overlying clay of the Shiloh Marl Member, pH 5.4. Approximately 3-4 slope. Standing water ranges from 1” deep in the outermost herbaceous ecotone to 8-10” deep in the center of the pond.
Community Description (Field): Herbaceous zone dominated by Phragmites with standing water and other species in the transition zone from Phragmites to water. The observation point is the transition zone. Elsewhere, Phragmites is nearly a monoculture. In the center, standing water is a much higher percent of surface cover (except for a large Liquidambar that has fallen and covers ~ 1/4 of the area).
