Community Type: coastal plain pond
General Description: Two coastal plain intermittent ponds within pitch pine-shrub oak-heath forest, between two branches of the Bass River. The surrounding landscape is relatively flat, underlain by sand substrate of the Cohansey Formation, drained by the Bartlett Branch 500 feet to the west and the East Branch 3000 to the east. Panicum rigidulum var. pubescens - Dichanthelium sp. - Sphagnum sp. Herbaceous Vegetation dominates the uppermost herbaceous zone of both ponds. The adjacent lower pondshores are dominated by Carex striata var. brevis or are open muck with standing water and very sparsely vegetated. Associated species include Eleocharis tricostata, E. olivacea, Dichanthelium sp., Nymphaea odorata, Xyris difformis, Juncus effusus, Sphagnum sp., Scirpus cyperinus, Drosera intermedia, Proserpinaca sp., Panicum rigidulum var. pubescens, Dulichium arundinaceum and seedlings of Chamaedaphne calyculata and Vaccinium corymbosum. The southern pond also has a small patch of Juncus effusus in its center with similar associated species. Adjacent shrub communities of both ponds are dominated by Chamaedaphne calyculata, surrounded by a taller shrub zone including Vaccinium corymbosum, Lyonia mariana, Ilex glabra, Kalmia angustifolia, Gaylussacia baccata, Andropogon glomeratus, A. virginicus, and Panicum rigidulum var. pubescens. Pinus rigida dominates the surrounding zone with a very small presence of Acer rubrum. A road lies between 80 to 200 feet just west of the ponds. Cranberry bogs occupy the confluence of the Bartlett and East Branches less than 5000 feet from the site. While the surrounding area is overwhelmingly forest, there is residential development to the southeast around Lake Absegami and to the south and west along paved roads and in Leektown. Closely spaced parallel sand roads to the northeast indicate forest management (for wildlife or timber), but the surrounding buffer area otherwise appears free of anthropogenic disturbance.
General Description (field): A coastal plain pond with 4 distinct vegetative zones surrounded by primarily pitch pine/shrub oak upland. The four zones are: 1) Chamaedaphne or tall shrub, 2) A. virginicus, 3) Carex striata var. brevis, and 4) open substrate/herbaceous zone. The site has good herbaceous diversity (many species overlooked given the date of the survey). A distinctive, narrow Andropogon virginicus zone is found below the perimeter Chamaedaphne or tall shrub zone.
Community Description: Excellent quality herbaceous pondshore community occurring in the upper shores of two coastal plain intermittent ponds 700 feet apart. The larger occurrence, in the north pond occupies about 25% of the pond in a narrow band bordering the shrub zone. It is dominated by Andropogon virginicus (70%), with Panicum rigidulum var. pubescens (10%), Panicum virgatum (1%) and less than 1% Carex striata var. brevis, Rhynchospora chalarocephala, Amphicarpum purshii, Dichanthelium sp., Cyperus dentatus, Drosera intermedia, Eleocharis olivacea, E. tricostata, Dulichium arundinaceum, Xyris difformis and Cyperus retrorsus. Sand and gravel are present on the surface of this area. The smaller occurrence in the south pond occupies about 40% of the pond in a narrow band bordering the shrub zone. It is dominated by Panicum rigidulum var. pubescens (50%) and Cyperus retrorsus (30%), with Carex striata var. brevis (5%), and less than 1% Andropogon glomeratus, Dichanthelium sp., Dulichium arundinaceum, Andropogon virginicus, and Juncus effusus. This south pond has a layer of muck over sand. Both ponds are underlain by sand soil of the Cohansey Formation. Water is present in both ponds in adjacent zones, as well as tire ruts in the larger occurrence. Full sun exposure, very gentle slope.
Community Description (field): Chamaedaphne or tall shrub zone - This is a narrow, drier zone between a shrub perimeter and the Carex striata var. brevis zone. Other grasses and sedges are present. Most of the vegetation has died off so the survey is incomplete. Sand and gravel is present on the surface, likely kicked up by vehicular traffic. The zone proabably represents 25% of the pond. Multiple tire ruts are present, holding water and plants and increasing diversity in this zone.
NOTE: Although the whole acreage, 3.9 acres, for both ponds was mapped for this occurrence, Panicum rigidulum var. pubescens - Dichanthelium sp. - Sphagnum sp. Herbaceous Vegetation occupies approximately 1.9 acres, 1.2 and 0.7 acres of the northern and southern ponds, respectively.
