Community Type: coastal plain pond
General Description: Coastal plain intermittent ponds within pitch pine-shrub oak-heath forest, between two branches of the Bass River. The surrounding landscape is relatively flat, underlain by sand substrate of the Cohansey Formation, drained by the Bartlett Branch to the west about 500 feet and the East Branch to the east about 3000 feet. Carex striata var. brevis. herbaceous vegetation dominates the middle herbaceous zone of the pond. The adjacent central zone is very sparsely vegetated with Eleocharis tricostata, E. olivacea, Xyris sp., Dichanthelium sp., Panicum rigidulum var. pubescens, Juncus pelocarpus, Nymphaea odorata, Carex striata var. brevis, Dulichium arundinaceum and Cladium mariscoides, with a patch of Chamaedaphne calyculata. The surrounding zone is dominated Andropogon virginicus, with Panicum rigidulum var. pubescens, Panicum virgatum, Carex striata var. brevis, Rhynchospora chalarocephala, Amphicarpum purshii, Dichanthelium sp., Cyperus dentatus, Drosera intermedia, Eleocharis olivacea, E. tricostata, Dulichium arundinaceum, Xyris difformis and Cyperus retrorsus. The surrounding shrub zone is dominated by Chamaedaphne calyculata and Vaccinium corymbosum, with Lyonia mariana, Ilex glabra, Panicum virgatum and Kalmia angustifolia. Pinus rigida dominates the surrounding forest. A road lies 80 to 200 feet just west of the ponds. Cranberry bogs occupy the confluence of the Bartlett and East Branches less than 5000 feet from of the site. While the surrounding area is overwhelmingly forest, there is residential development to the southeast around Lake Absegami and to the south and west along paved roads and in Leektown. Closely spaced parallel sand roads to the northeast indicate forest management (for wildlife or timber), but the surrounding buffer area otherwise appears free of anthropogenic disturbance.
General Description (field): A coastal plain pond with 4 distinct vegetative zones surrounded by primarily pitch pine/shrub oak upland. The four zones are: 1) Chamaedaphne or tall shrub, 2) A. virginicus, 3) Carex striata var. brevis, and 4) open substrate/herbaceous zone. The site has good herbaceous diversity (many species overlooked given the date of the survey). A distinctive, narrow Andropogon virginicus zone is found below the perimeter Chamaedaphne or tall shrub zone.
Community Description: Chamaedaphne or tall shrub zone - This is a narrow, 1-4m zone around the perimeter.
