Community Type: coastal plain pond
General Description: Coastal plain intermittent ponds within pitch pine-shrub oak-heath forest, between two branches of the Bass River. The surrounding landscape is relatively flat, underlain by sand substrate of the Cohansey Formation, drained by the Bartlett Branch to the west about 500 feet and the East Branch to the east about 3000 feet. Eleocharis (olivacea, microcarpa, robbinsii) – Xyris (difformis var. difformis, smalliana) Herbaceous Vegetation occupies the central to middle zones of the ponds. In the southern pond, a patch of Juncus effusus occupies the center of the pond. The adjacent middle to upper zones of the ponds include Andropogon virginicus, Panicum rigidulum var. pubescens, Panicum virgatum, Carex striata var. brevis, Rhynchospora chalarocephala, Amphicarpum purshii, Dichanthelium sp., Cyperus dentatus, Drosera intermedia, Eleocharis olivacea, E. tricostata, Dulichium arundinaceum, Xyris difformis and/or Cyperus retrorsus. Surrounding shrub communities of both ponds are dominated by Chamaedaphne calyculata, surrounded by a taller shrub zone including Vaccinium corymbosum, Lyonia mariana, Ilex glabra, Kalmia angustifolia, Gaylussacia baccata, Andropogon glomeratus, A. virginicus and/or Panicum rigidulum var. pubescens. Pinus rigida dominates the surrounding zone. A road lies 800 to 200 feet just west of the ponds. Cranberry bogs occupy the confluence of the Bartlett and East Branches less than 5000 feet from the site. While the surrounding area is overwhelmingly forest, there is residential development to the southeast around Lake Absegami and to the south and west along paved roads and in Leektown. Closely spaced parallel sand roads to the northeast indicate forest management (for wildlife or timber), but the surrounding buffer area otherwise appears free of anthropogenic disturbance.
General Description (field): A coastal plain pond with 4 distinct vegetative zones surrounded by primarily pitch pine/shrub oak upland. The four zones are: 1) Chamaedaphne or tall shrub, 2) A. virginicus, 3) Carex striata var. brevis, and 4) open substrate/herbaceous zone. The site has good herbaceous diversity (many species overlooked given the date of the survey). A distinctive, narrow Andropogon virginicus zone is found below the perimeter Chamaedaphne or tall shrub zone.
Community Description: Excellent quality very sparsely vegetated herbaceous pondshore community occurring in the central to middle zones of two coastal plain intermittent ponds 700 feet apart. The larger occurrence, in the north pond, occupies the central zone and is characterized by Eleocharis tricostata (2%), E. olivacea (2%), Xyris sp.(2%), Dichanthelium sp. (1%), Panicum rigidulum var. pubescens (1%), less than 1% Juncus pelocarpus, Nymphaea odorata, Carex striata var. brevis, Dulichium arundinaceum and Cladium mariscoides, with a patch of Chamaedaphne calyculata, and 90% unvegetated muck. The smaller occurrence, in the south pond, is characterized by Sphagnum sp. (30%), Eleocharis tricostata (5%), E. olivacea (1%), Dichanthelium sp. (1%), Juncus effusus (1%), less than 1% Proserpinaca pectinata, Carex striata var. brevis, Nymphaea odorata, an unidentified grass, Xyris difformis var. difformis and Scirpus cyperinus, and about 90% unvegetated surface cover that includes muck and desiccated Sphagnum. Soil is 8-10 cm of muck overlying sand of the Cohansey Formation. Standing water up 1½ inches deep in northern pond and about 8 inches deep in the southern pond. Variable aspect, gentle slope.
Community Description (field): open substrate / herbaceous zone - This is an open water zone with a muck substrate and scattered herbs. Standing water is up to 1.5' deep. There are many deep ruts from trucks. The zone represents about 15% of the entire pond area.
NOTE: Although the whole acreage, 3.9 acres, for both ponds was mapped for this occurrence, Eleocharis (olivacea, microcarpa, robbinsii) – Xyris (difformis var. difformis, smalliana) Herbaceous Vegetation occupies approximately 0.7 and 0.3 acres of the northern and southern ponds, respectively.
