Community Type: coastal plain pond
General Description: Coastal plain pond ("CPP") surrounded by pitch pine/black huckleberry-scrub oak upland. CPP has 4 basic vegetation zones: 1) Chamaedaphne border, 2) Panicum longifolium/sedge zone (50%), 3) open substrate/herbaceous zone, 4) Juncus effusus zone. The distinctive feature of this pond is the J. effusus zone. Some small sedges are present but many brown leaves.
Community Description: This zone is characterized by scattered Eleocharis tricostata and Panicum sp. clumps and other herbs in an open muck substrate. A dried crust (now hydrated) of Sphagnum is present. Sprouting corn kernels are present in an open (now ponded) substrate. This zone occupies approximately 30% of the pond area.
