Community Type: coastal plain pond
General Description: Coastal plain intermittent pond within pitch pine-scrub oak forest between two branches of the Bass River in a region dotted with intermittent ponds. The surrounding landscape is relatively flat, underlain by sand substrate of the Cohansey Formation, drained by the Bartlett Branch to the north and the West Branch to the east about 2000’ and 1200’, respectively, as well as an unnamed tributary to the southwest about 1200’. Carex striata var. brevis Herbaceous Vegetation dominates the pond. The surrounding forest zone is dominated by Acer rubrum, Vaccinium corymbosum, Sphagnum sp. and Chamaedaphne calyculata, with Lyonia mariana, Ilex glabra, Leucothoe racemosa and Carex striata var. brevis. Coniferous forest surrounds the site. Cranberry bogs occupy the confluence of the Bartlett and East Branches about 1300’ east of the site. While the surrounding area is overwhelmingly forest, there is residential development to the east around Lake Absegami and to the south and west along paved roads and in Leektown. Closely spaced parallel sand roads to the northeast but the surrounding buffer area otherwise appears free of anthropogenic disturbance.
General Description (field): Coastal plain pond with simple vegetation zonation: 1) there is an outer narrow perimeter which is a red maple/tall shrub zone, 2) there is an inner herbaceous zone which is Carex striata var. brevis with a few scattered herbs (with Cladium mariscoides being subdominant). The surrounding woods is pitch pine with a scrub oak understory.
Community Description: Good quality herbaceous pondshore community occurring in the central to upper zones of a coastal plain intermittent pond. Dominant species are Carex striata var. brevis (85%) and Sphagnum sp. (50%), with evenly dispersed Cladium mariscoides (5%) and less than 1% Panicum rigidulum var. pubescens, Pinus rigida seedlings, Acer rubrum seedlings, Drosera intermedia and Andropogon virginicus. Unvegetated surface cover is approximately 10% (bare soil) with desiccated Sphagnum. Soil is muck underlain by sand of the Cohansey Formation. Saturated at surface, but no standing water on survey date. Flat to gentle slope with variable aspect. (This is the inner herbaceous zone characterized by Carex striata var. brevis with evenly dispersed Cladium mariscoides, other scattered herbs, and thick Sphagnum throughout.)
NOTE: Although the whole 0.9-acre pond was mapped for this occurrence, Carex striata var. brevis Herbaceous Vegetation occupies approximately 0.4 acres of the pond.
