Average Soil Texture: Mineral - silt loam, silty clay loam
General Soil Description: dark brown (not gray) soil, overlain with 3-4" of roots and fine particles of decomposed plant material
Landscape Description: Survey site is located in a forested floodplain within Glassboro Wildlife Management Area. Streams run northeast to southwest and north to south about 700' to the west and east, respectively. The forest is a mixture of deciduous and evergreen trees. The town of Glassboro is to the N and W and commercial areas can be found about 1/2 mile W, along Rt. 47. While forest surrounds the ponds for at least 1/2 mile to the W, N and E, a much larger forest area extends SE within the WMA. The land is virtually flat, part of an extended floodplain surrounding Little Ease Run.

Community Type: coastal plain pond (narrow shrub band)
Community Description: A dense thicket of shrubs borders the coastal plain pond as a mosaic of species, primarily Clethra alnifolia and Ericaceous shrubs. Chamaecyparis thyoides and Acer rubrum form a canopy over the narrow band of shrubs, which is different from the surrounding forest only in density and the addition of a few species, such as Vaccinium macrocarpon. These additional species are also found in the adjecent mixed shrub/herbaceous band between this shrub zone and the very open area of soil and herbaceous spp.
Additional species present but not in plot: Eupatorium maculatum (0.01%)
