Average Soil Texture: Organic - muck over sand of the Cohansey Formation
Von Post scale of peat decomposition: H9
pH of organic soil: 3.8 at 15.2 cm
Water table: >30.5 cm
Landscape Description: Survey site is located in a forested floodplain within Glassboro Wildlife Management Area. Streams run northeast to southwest and north to south about 700' to the west and east, respectively. The forest is a mixture of deciduous and evergreen trees. The town of Glassboro is to the N and W and commercial areas can be found about 1/2 mile W, along Rt. 47. While forest surrounds the ponds for at least 1/2 mile to the W, N and E, a much larger forest area extends SE within the WMA. The land is virtually flat, part of an extended floodplain surrounding Little Ease Run. (0.5-acre pondshore community in good condition within a historically disturbed coastal plain intermittent pond surrounded by Atlantic white cedar swamp in good condition.)

Community Type: coastal plain pond (herbaceous center)
General Description: Coastal plain intermittent pond, historically disturbed (mapped as artificial pond), within Atlantic white cedar wetlands and mixed deciduous-evergreen forest. The surrounding area includes extensive forested wetlands associated with Little Ease Run, which is located 1000’ to the east of the pond. Site is underlain by sands of the Cohansey Formation. Eleocharis (olivacea, microcarpa, robbinsii) – Xyris (difformis var. difformis, smalliana) Herbaceous Vegetation dominates the central zone of the pond. The adjacent upper pondshore zone (A3) is dominated by Chamaedaphne calyculata, with Carex striata var. brevis, Juncus canadensis, Sphagnum cuspidatum, Sphagnum pylaesii, Decodon verticillatus, Juncus sp., Triadenum virginicum, Vaccinium corymbosum, Drosera intermedia, Bidens sp., Lycopus virginicus and Sagittaria latifolia. The surrounding shrub zone (A2) is dominated by Clethra alnifolia and Vaccinium corymbosum, with Chamaedaphne calyculata, Rhododendron viscosum, Sphagnum papilosum, Cephalanthus occidentalis, Smilax rotundifolia, Vaccinium macrocarpon, Triadenum virginicum, Ilex verticillata, Parthenocissus quinquefolia and (at opening by road) Eupatorium maculatum. The surrounding wetland forest (A1) is dominated by Chamaecyparis thyoides, Acer rubrum and Clethra alnifolia, with Vaccinium corymbosum, Nyssa sylvatica, Ilex opaca, Kalmia latifolia, Magnolia virginiana, mosses and Smilax rotundifolia. Extensive mixed evergreen-deciduous upland forest and wetlands to the south and east for many miles and north and west about 2000’. The town of Clayton is west and south about 2000’, with residential and commercial areas along roads surrounding the forest, which is in Glassboro Wildlife Management area.
Community Description: Good quality sparsely vegetated herbaceous pondshore community occurring in the central zone of a coastal plain intermittent pond. Dominant species is Eleocharis olivacea (12%), with Panicum verrucosum (8%), Eleocharis microcarpa (7%), Juncus pelocarpus (3%), Scleria reticularis (2%), Drosera intermedia (1%), Nymphaea odorata (1%), less than 1% Proserpinaca pectinata, Sagittaria c.f. latifolia, Sagittaria sp., Dichanthelium sp., and 70% unvegetated surface cover (65% bare muck, 4% litter and duff and 1% downed wood). Species are scattered throughout, with a large patch of Panicum verrucosum in the southwest corner of the patch and a patch of Nymphaea odorata in the southeast (dried out on survey date). Muck soil, pH 3.8, over sand of the Cohansey Formation. No standing water on survey date. Full sun exposure with very gentle slope (0-3º).
Community Description (field): Herbaceous species dominated by grasses and sedges are scattered over the open, dry pond bed. The northwest corner is covered with Eleocharis spp. that are now completely dried out. In the southwest corner, large patches of Panicum verrucosum and a mixture of (larger) Eleocharis, Scleria sp., and (finer) Juncus are spreading from the shrub border towards the center of the pond. A patch of Nymphaea in the SW corner is dried up.
NOTE: Although the whole pond (1.8 acres) was mapped for this occurrence, Eleocharis (olivacea, microcarpa, robbinsii) – Xyris (difformis var. difformis, smalliana) Herbaceous Vegetation occupies approximately 0.5 acres of the pond.
