Landscape Narrative |
Average Soil Texture: Mineral - very moist silt loam over sand of the Cohansey Formation; pH at 15.2 cm = 3.8
Landscape Description: Small, 0.25-acre, pondshore community in fair condition within a small, 0.6-acre coastal plain intermittent pond on a plateau surrounded by deciduous forest. Site sits on a plateu, 40-50' higher than Cedar Run, the creek just 500' to the N. It is surrounded by deciduous forest and ORV trails. A golf course is to the SE. Very young trees, 3-4" in diameter, crowd into some areas, while others have 40-50' (maybe taller) trees in these rolling hills.

Observation Narrative |
Community Type: coastal plain pond (herbaceous zone)
General Description: Coastal plain intermittent pond on plateau 40-50’ higher than Cedar Run, which lies about 500’ to the north, within deciduous forest. The surrounding landscape of rolling hills is dotted with intermittent ponds every 500-1000’ and is underlain by sand of the Cohansey Formation. Leersia oryzoides - Polygonum caespitosum - Polygonum hydropiper Herbaceous Vegetation dominates the middle to upper zones of the pond. The adjacent central pondshore zone is dominated by Cephalanthus occidentalis, with an understory of unidentified grasses. The adjacent upper pondshore zone (A2) is dominated by Acer rubrum and Leucothoe racemosa, with Liquidambar styraciflua, Clethra alnifolia, Sphagnum cuspidatum, Nyssa sylvatica, Vaccinium corymbosum, Quercus phellos, unidentified mosses, Diospyros virginiana, Smilax rotundifolia, seedlings of Liriodendron tulipifera and Cephalanthus occidentalis, and Lycopus sp. The surrounding forest has a similar mix of species. Small 3-4” diameter trees crowd into surrounding areas along with tall 40-50’, large diameter trees, indicating relatively recent logging or other disturbance. ORV trails lie within 30’of the pond and traverse the surrounding hills. There is a farm about 700’ north and a golf course about 400’ southeast of the site that may affect the hydrology of the pond. The surrounding area is a mix of forest and agriculture with new housing encroaching on the region.
Community Description: Fair quality herbaceous pondshore community occurring in the middle to upper zones of a coastal plain intermittent pond. Community occurrence is dominated by two unidentified grasses (65% and 10%), with Sphagnum fimbriatum (3%) and less than 1% Panicum verrucosum, Polygonum caespitosum, P. hydropiper, Bidens discoidea, seedlings of Cephalanthus occidentalis, Digitaria filiformis var. villosa and Echinocloa crus-galli. Patches of Panicum verrucosum (50%) are along the outer edges of this zone and Scirpus cyperinus clumps dot the east edge. Very moist silt loam soil, pH 3.8, is underlain by sand of the Cohansey Formation. Part sun exposure due to small size of pond within surrounding trees. Gentle slope (less than 3º) increases around the outer edges to 4 or 5º.
Community Description (field): Herbaceous zone dominated by grasses. A large patch of Cephalanthus forms a canopy over the NE 1/3 of this area. Scirpus clumps are found along the E edge. Panicum verrucosum patches grow along the outer edges.
Other species present but not in plot: Patches of Panicum verrucosum (50%) are along the outer edges of this zone and Scirpus cyperinus clumps dot the east edge.
