Community Type: coastal plain pond
General Description: Coastal plain intermittent pond surrounded by good quality deciduous lowland forest in the vicinity of residential development, agricultural land and railroad R.O.W. Surrounding landscape is very flat, underlain by sand substrate of the Cohansey Formation. Rhexia virginica - Panicum verrucosum Herbaceous Vegetation dominates the central to upper zones of the pond. The surrounding shrub zone is dominated by Cephalanthus occidentalis, with Panicum verrucosum, Decodon verticillatus, Polygonum c.f. pennsylvanicum, Scirpus cyperinus and Conyza canadensis. The surrounding forest zone is dominated by Acer rubrum, Nyssa sylvatica and Vaccinium corymbosum, with Liquidambar styraciflua, Ilex verticillata and Thelypteris palustris. The wetland forest is surrounded by residential development within the town of Clayton and a railroad R.O.W. just east of the site.
Community Description: Excellent quality herbaceous pondshore community occurring in the central to upper zones of a coastal plain intermittent pond. Community occurrence is made up of two somewhat distinct patches, both with a relatively homogeneous mix of species, with some patchiness that likely varies spatially and temporally. The central zone (A1) is dominated by Rhynchospora macrostachya (40%) and Rhynchospora scirpoides (35%), with Rhynchospora nitens (15%), Hypericum dentatum (5%), Panicum verrucosum (5%), Polygonum caespitosum (2.5%), Ludwigia linearis (0.5%), Eleocharis olivacea (0.5%), Nymphaea odorata (0.5%), Hypericum mutilum (0.5%), Lindernia dubia (0.5%) and less than 1% Echinocloa crus-galli, Rhexia virginica, Bidens frondosa, Conyza canadensis, Decodon verticillatus, Xanthium sp., Euthamia graminifolia and Gratiola aurea. The surrounding middle to upper zone (A2) is dominated by Panicum verrucosum (90%), with Polygonum caespitosum (5%) and Bidens frondosa (2%). Soil is dry muck with deep cracks overlying sand of the Cohansey Formation. No water on survey date. Variable aspect, very gentle slope (0-3º).
NOTE: Although the whole 2.9-acre pond was mapped for this occurrence, Rhexia virginica - Panicum verrucosum Herbaceous Vegetation occupies approximately 1.8 acres of the pond.
