Community Type: coastal plain pond
Community Description: Upper shore dominated by Acer rubrum. There is a marked rim (1-1.5') at the edge of this zone. Trees are smaller on the ledge, though still predominantly Acer rubrum. An understory of Lycopodium grows there. Below the rim, the understory is markedly devoid of vegetation, other than mosses growing 0.5-1.5' on the tree trunks. There is a gradual slope from the herbaceous zone, about 2-3 degrees. On the S and E sides of this area, there is hardly any shrub understory, while on the W side, there is Vaccinium at ~30% cover, and a little less on the N side.
Other species present but not in plot (in surrounding woods): Quercus phellos, Cypripedium sp., Lycopodium sp., Epigaea repens, Castanea pumila, Magnolia acuminata, Chimaphila maculata
