Landscape Description: Site is located in a mixed deciduous-evergreen forest with Castanea pumila and Magnolia. It is in the upper reaches of Deep Run, just east of Thundergut Wildlife Management Area. There is rolling topography and the ponds are at about 90' elevation, while Thundergut Run is at 50' and Cobbs Mill Lake, just to the south, is at 60' elevation. The region is predominantly forest, with homes scattered along roadsides, Cobbs Mill just to the S and a horse farm just N. Agricultural fields are scattered.

Community Type: coastal plain pond
Community Description: Outer zone of herbaceous vegetation dominated by Panicum verrucosum. There is a relatively steep slope of 3-4 degrees from the edge of the Decodon to the woodland edge. This area is characterized by large patches of Panicum and unvegetated areas covered with leaves. Small numbers of other species are scattered within the Panicum patches. There are a few large areas of moss, which is still green and rather dry Sphagnum.
