Landscape Narrative ? Average Soil Texture: Mineral - sandy loam Landscape Description: Site is located in a mixed deciduous-evergreen forest with Castanea pumila and Magnolia. It is in the upper reaches of Deep Run, just east of Thundergut Wildlife Management Area. There is rolling topography and the ponds are at about 90' elevation, while Thundergut Run is at 50' and Cobbs Mill Lake, just to the south, is at 60' elevation. The region is predominantly forest, with homes scattered along roadsides, Cobbs Mill just to the S and a horse farm just N. Agricultural fields are scattered.

Observation Narrative ? Community Type: coastal plain pond Community Description: Upper rim of coastal plain pond dominated by Acer rubrum. This is a very narrow zone, transitioning immediately into the surrounding forest understory of Lycopodium. Smilax rotundifolia grows relatively thickly in this area, particularly along the W and E sides of the pond. Slope is 10-20 degrees. A hunter's platform can be seen in the W edge.
