Observation Narrative ? Community Type: coastal plain pond General Description: Coastal plain intermittent pond in pitch pine-scrub oak- heath forest. The surrounding landscape is undulating with intermittent ponds scattered every few hundred feet around the southeastern drainages of the Pope Branch (and Atlantic white cedar swamps), an upper tributary of the Wading River. Underlying soil is sand of the Cohansey Formation. Eleocharis (microcarpa, olivacea) - Juncus pelocarpus - Eriocaulon aquaticum Herbaceous Vegetation dominates the central to middle zones of the pond. The adjacent upper pondshore is dominated on the west by Panicum verrucosum, with Sphagnum sp., Amphicarpum purshii, Triadenum virginicum, Rhynchospora alba, Cladium mariscoides, Carex striata var. brevis, Andropogon gyrans, Juncus pelocarpus and Rhexia sp. On the east, the north, east and south, the adjacent pondshore is dominated by Vaccinium corymbosum with a narrow, intermittent band of Chamaedaphne calyculata and scattered Decodon verticillatus and Acer rubrum, along with Leucothoe racemosa, Clethra alnifolia, Ilex glabra, Photinia pyrifolia and Sphagnum sp. The pond is surrounded by a large expanse of Pinus rigida dominated forest to the east and south, with Chamaecyparis thyoides swamp to the north, along the Pope Branch. A large cranberry bog replaces the cedar swamp to the north about 3000’ and a Superfund site is fenced off and monitored about 3000’ to the northeast. Paved road lie about 5000’ to the northeast and 8000’ north. Sand roads traverse the surrounding forest. Part of pond had been crisscrossed by dirt bikes, but the surrounding area is generally undisturbed, except for hunting or for forest management (logging or fire management). Community Description: Excellent quality herbaceous pondshore community occurring in the central to middle zones of a coastal plain intermittent pond. Community occurrence is very sparsely vegetated, dominated by Juncus pelocarpus (4-5%) and Eleocharis robbinsii (4%), with Nymphoides cordata (about 1%), less than 1% Eleocharis olivacea, Drosera intermedia, Rhynchospora alba, Eriocaulon aquaticum, Panicum verrucosum and Smilax rotundifolia, and an undetermined amount of Sphagnum sp. Distribution is somewhat patchy, with Nymphoides cordata in greater abundance in the eastern half of the patch where a muck substrate has little surficial sand. The northwestern corner of the eastern half has the Sphagnum sp., along with much denser Eleocharis robbinsii and much less Juncus pelocarpus. The western portion of the patch has much more surficial sand. The whole area is characterized by shallow depressions about 2 x 2’ around by a few inches deep, which are more pronounced where Sphagnum is present in the north central part of the pond. Soil is sand of the Cohansey Formation overlain by muck, still moist on survey date in areas supporting Nymphoides cordata and Sphagnum sp. Full sun exposure, virtually flat. Community Description (field): Central herbaceous zone characterized by Nymphoides cordata, black substrate with little sand on surface, depressions (~0.5 m x 0.5 m) less pronounced than in surrounding zone. Northwestern corner has much denser Eleocharis robbinsii and much less Juncus. NW corner also has Sphagnum (still green, very young). NOTE: Ground water quality is monitored at Superfund site ½ mile to the north and toxins from that site could be affecting this area.
