Observation Narrative ? Community Type: coastal plain pond General Description: Coastal plain intermittent pond within a relatively large expanse of pitch pine-oak forest in a sparsely inhabited area of rolling hills underlain by sand of the Cohansey Formation. Deep Run Creek is about 500’ south of the pond. Nymphaea odorata - Eleocharis robbinsii Herbaceous Vegetation dominates the central to middle zone of the pond. The adjacent upper pondshore zone is dominated by Decodon verticillatus and an unidentified grass, with Sphagnum cuspidatum, Cephalanthus occidentalis, Eleocharis olivacea, Clethra alnifolia, Triadenum virginicum and Cuscuta sp. The pond is surrounded by Acer rubrum, Leucothoe racemosa, Clethra alnifolia, Sphagnum cuspidatum, Vaccinium corymbosum and Decodon verticillatus for 20 to 30 meters into the surrounding pitch pine-oak forest. A powerline is about 1000’ northwest of the site and there are a few homes close to Thundergut Lake about 3000’ south. The town of Alloway is about 1½ miles to the northwest and there are homes along all the roads in the area. Though the forest immediately surrounding the pond is a relatively undisturbed buffer, the region seems to be accepting greater residential development. Agricultural fields cover most of the landscape several miles to the east. Community Description: High quality sparsely vegetated herbaceous pondshore community occurring in the central to middle zones of a coastal plain intermittent pond. Dominant species is Nymphaea odorata (15%), with Eleocharis olivacea (8%), Rhynchospora scirpoides (2%) and less than 1% seedlings of Polygonum sp. Species distribution is relatively homogeneous, with a higher concentration of Nymphaea odorata close to standing water and one patch of Eleocharis olivacea in the southwest corner. Patches of water throughout, particularly in depressions and cracks, with one large ponded area about 15 x 30 m in the west and south corner. Exposed muck and litter cover 55% of the area and water covers about 20%. Firm, moist muck with pH 3.8 is underlain by sands of the Cohansey Formation. Full sun exposure with virtually no slope. Community Description (field): Central herbaceous zone of coastal plain pond dominated by Nymphaea and Eleocharis. A patch of water ~30x15 m covers an area in the W and S corner and patches of water can be seen throughout the area in depressions and cracks, with exposed mud covering most of the zone at this time. Species are scattered throughout the zone with one patch dominated by Eleocharis in the SW and a higher concentration of Nymphaea closer to the standing water. Mud is still very moist but firm. Much of the Nymphaea was barely discernable, dead and covered with a film of soil. All the Eleocharis, except patches in depressions with standing water, were dried out.
