Observation Narrative |
Community Type: coastal plain pond
General Description: Coastal plain intermittent pond within pitch pine-oak-huckleberry upland forest that extends many miles in all directions. The surrounding landscape is relatively flat, underlain by the Cohansey Formation, medium- to coarse-grained quartz sand. The pond in located between the South Branch of Mt. Misery Brook (2000 feet to northwest) and McDonald’s Branch (4000 feet to southwest). Carex striata var. brevis Herbaceous Vegetation occurs in the middle to upper zones of the pond. The adjacent central zone is dominated by Xyris smalliana, with Eriocaulon aquaticum, Eleocharis olivacea, Panicum verrucosum, Juncus sp., Eleocharis robbinsii, Eleocharis microcarpa, Rhynchospora macrostachya, Dichanthelium saborulum var. thinium and Dulichium arundinaceum. The Carex zone is bordered on the west by a Chamaedaphne calyculata on elevated ground (about 6 inches higher than the central zone) with an understory of Sphagnum sp. and scattered Kalmia angustifolia. The upper shore of the pond is dominated by Vaccinium corymbosum, with Kalmia angustifolia, Chamaedaphne calyculata, and scattered Clethra alnifolia, Lyonia mariana, Sphagnum sp., Acer rubrum, Pinus rigida, Nyssa sylvatica and Ilex glabra. The surrounding pitch pine-oak forest is crossed by a few sand roads. What appears to be a sand mine lies about 800 feet southwest. Otherwise there is practically no current anthropogenic disturbance in the surrounding buffer area.
Community Description: Excellent quality herbaceous pondshore community occurring in the middle to upper zones of a coastal plain intermittent pond. Carex striata var. brevis (50%) and Sphagnum cuspidatum (40%) are dominant, with Dichanthelium sabulorum var. thinium (2%), less than 1% Drosera intermedia, Panicum verrucosum, Dulichium arundinaceum, Cephalanthus occidentalis, Rhexia sp., Eriocaulon aquaticum, Cladium mariscoides and Eleocharis olivacea scattered and sometimes in small patches. A patch of Woodwardia virginica grows along the eastern edge of the occurrence. Muck soil is underlain by sand of the Cohansey Formation. Full sun exposure; very gentle slope (0-3º).
Community Description (field): Herbaceous zone dominated by Carex striata var. brevis. A patch of Woodwardia grows on the E edge. Cephalanthus are scattered. Other species are found throughout, some in small patches below the Carex. Southwest, only Carex and Sphagnum (now dry) are evident (also large areas elsewhere).
Other species present but not in survey area: Woodwardia virginica (0.01%) - small patch along eastern edge
NOTE: Although the whole pond, 3.2 acres, was mapped for this occurrence, Carex striata var. brevis Herbaceous Vegetation occupies approximately 1.2 acres of the pond.
