Community Type: coastal plain pond
General Description: Coastal plain intermittent pond within pitch pine-oak-huckleberry upland forest that extends many miles in all directions. The surrounding landscape is relatively flat, underlain by the Cohansey Formation, medium- to coarse-grained quartz sand. The pond in located between the South Branch of Mt. Misery Brook (2000 feet to northwest) and McDonald’s Branch (4000 feet to southwest). Carex striata var. brevis Herbaceous Vegetation occurs in the middle to upper zones of the pond. The adjacent central zone is dominated by Xyris smalliana, with Eriocaulon aquaticum, Eleocharis olivacea, Panicum verrucosum, Juncus sp., Eleocharis robbinsii, Eleocharis microcarpa, Rhynchospora macrostachya, Dichanthelium saborulum var. thinium and Dulichium arundinaceum. The Carex zone is bordered on the west by a Chamaedaphne calyculata on elevated ground (about 6 inches higher than the central zone) with an understory of Sphagnum sp. and scattered Kalmia angustifolia. The upper shore of the pond is dominated by Vaccinium corymbosum, with Kalmia angustifolia, Chamaedaphne calyculata, and scattered Clethra alnifolia, Lyonia mariana, Sphagnum sp., Acer rubrum, Pinus rigida, Nyssa sylvatica and Ilex glabra. The surrounding pitch pine-oak forest is crossed by a few sand roads. What appears to be a sand mine lies about 800 feet southwest. Otherwise there is practically no current anthropogenic disturbance in the surrounding buffer area.
Community Description: High quality herbaceous pondshore community occurring as two areas within the central zone of a coastal plain intermittent pond. The northern area, roughly 100 x 150’ (A1), is dominated by Xyris smalliana (25%), with Eriocaulon aquaticum (10%), Eleocharis olivacea (5%), Panicum verrucosum (1%), Juncus sp. (1%), Eleocharis robbinsii (1%) and less than 1% Eleocharis microcarpa and Rhynchospora macrostachya. Distribution is patchy, with Eleocharis olivacea prominent in the center, and Xyris smalliana and Eriocaulon aquaticum prominent in the southern portion and extending into a surrounding Carex striata var. brevis zone. The northern edge of this area, a 20 x 40’ patch, is virtually a monoculture of Dulichium arundinaceum (35-40% cover). The second, smaller area, about 30 x 30’ (A3), is dominated by Eleocharis microcarpa (30%), with Eleocharis olivacea (7%), Dulichium arundiceum (5%), and less than 1% Eleocharis robbinsii and Dichanthelium saborulum var. thinium. Both patches receive full sun and have a very gentle slope (0-3%), with 40-60% exposed moist, firm muck or sand substrate. Soil is sand of the Cohansey Formation with a thin surface layer of muck.
Community Description (field): Small patch (8x8 m) in S end of Carex zone dominated by Eriocaulon aquaticum and Eleocharis microcarpa and Eleocharis olivacea. Dulichium is scattered throughout.
