Average Soil Texture: mineral - loamy sand over sand of the Cohansey Formation; pH of mineral soil at 15.2 cm = 3.8
Geology: aeolian (loamy sand rim)
Landscape Description: 0.3-acre, pondshore community in good condition within a 2.4 acre coastal plain intermittent pond surrounded by pitch pine woodland and residential areas. The survey site is surrounded by pine woodland, with roads and homes within 300-600' in most directions. The Great Egg Harbor River runs SE ~900' N and E of the site.

Community Type: coastal plain pond
General Description: Coastal plain intermittent pond within pitch pine woodland surrounded by residential areas. The woodland extends about 300-600’ in most directions. The Great Egg Harbor River flows southeast about 900’ north and east of the site. Rhexia virginica - Panicum verrucosum Herbaceous Vegetation occupies all but a small bare central patch of the herbaceous zones of the pond. The surrounding shrub zone is very wide (between 75 and 160’ wide) and dominated by Vaccinium corymbosum. The surrounding woodland is dominated by Pinus rigida with a heath understory. Other than homes and commercial areas along nearby roads, woodland and forest is the dominant feature of the surrounding landscape, as well as the wetlands surrounding the Great Egg Harbor River and one large agricultural area north of the river. The hydrology of the pond has likely been affected by water use by the surrounding residences.
Community Description: Good quality herbaceous pondshore community occurring in the middle to upper zones of a coastal plain intermittent pond. Dominant species are Panicum verrucosum (30%) and Panicum rigidulum var. rigidulum (25%), Euthamia sp. (15%), Lachnanthes caroliniana (10%), with lichen (7%), Dichanthelium sp. (1%), Andropogon virginicus (1%), seedlings of Vaccinium corymbosum (1%) and less than 1% Triadenum virginicum, Pinus rigida seedlings and Acer rubrum seedlings. Distribution is in circular zones with the lowest zone limited to grasses, with forbs and woody seedlings in slightly higher elevations among the grasses, and overall densely vegetated (3% bare soil and 2% litter). One patch toward the upper zone is a sparsely vegetated monoculture of P. rigidulum var. rigidulum (40% cover with the rest bare soil or litter) and there is a barren moat around the upper shore, much wider along the southern edge of the pond, with only lichens amidst bare soil. Loamy sand soil, pH 3.8, is underlain by sand of the Cohansey Formation. A barren low-lying patch at the center of the pond indicated fairly recent water, but the site was dry on survey date. Full sun exposure with gentle slope overall, but noticeable zonation every 5 meters or so indicates changes in elevation.
Community Description (field): This coastal plain pond has conspicuous zonation (hence the name "bullseye") with the deepest depression only 4-5 m across. Though it is dominated by grasses and sedges, a larger percentage of forbs and young seedlings of shrubs and trees are found in most of the pond. Vegetation is scarcest along the S edge, where a band of lichen is 1-2 m wide, and a large patch of Panicum agrostoides (now, Panicum rigidulum var. rigidulum) has less than 40% cover (the rest being leaves or bare soil).
NOTE: Although the whole 2.4 acre pond was mapped for this occurrence, Rhexia virginica - Panicum verrucosum Herbaceous Vegetation occupies approximately 0.3 acres of the pond. The rest of the acreage is shrub zone dominated by Vaccinium corymbosum.
