Soil Description: loamy sand, pH 3.8, overlying silty clay of the Wildwood Member
Landscape Description: Pondshore community in excellent condition within a 2.5-acre coastal plain intermittent pond surrounded by high quality oak-pine forest. Known locally as Bucks Folly, survey site is surrounded by Quercus-Pinus forest, lowlands adjacent to a layer of agricultural field (very sandy soils). Site is ~2000' south of the Cohansey River and N of Bridges Sticks Creek and surrounding tidal swamps.

Observation Narrative |
Community Type: coastal plain pond
General Description: Coastal plain pond within relatively old, beautiful mixed pine-oak forest, currently dominated by deciduous species. The surrounding landscape is very gently rolling and though underlain by silty clay of the Wildwood Member, the surface soil is very sandy. Site is about 2000 feet south of the Cohansey River and north of Bridges Stocks Creek (with its tidal swamps). Rhexia virginica - Panicum verrucosum Herbaceous Vegetation dominates the central to middle zones (A1, A2, A3) of the pond. The adjacent upper pondshore zone (A4) is dominated by Decodon verticillatus and Rhexia mariana, with Panicum verrucosum and Sphagnum sp. A bare patch separates this zone along its western edge from the surrounding shrub zone (A5) dominated by Vaccinium corymbosum, with Clethra alnifolia, Leucothoe racemosa, Sphagnum sp., Smilax rotundifolia, Acer rubrum and Quercus phellos. The surrounding wetland forest (A6) is dominated by Nyssa sylvatica, with Liquidambar styraciflua, Acer rubrum, Quercus phellos, Leucothoe racemosa, Smilax rotundifolia, Vaccinium corymbosum and seedlings of Ilex opaca. Mixed deciduous evergreen forest surrounds the pond, extending south to the tidal swamps and north to the road. Agricultural fields are east of the site, along the road to the north, west and east, mixed with residences. There is no anthropogenic disturbance in the surrounding buffer other than the agricultural field to the east (about 60 feet), though the landowner thinks that a pond dug to the east in the 1980s has caused this pond to dry up.
Community Description: Excellent quality herbaceous pondshore community occurring in the central to middle zones of a coastal plain intermittent pond. Community occurrence is made up of three somewhat distinct zones that likely vary spatially and temporally. The central patch (A1) measures about 6 x 20 feet and is dominated by Panicum dichotomiflorum (40%), with Eleocharis olivacea (25%), Rhexia mariana (17%), Panicum verrucosum (3%) and about 15% bare soil. The surrounding zone (A2) forms a band between 15 and 40 feet wide and is dominated by Rhexia mariana (35%) and Eleocharis olivacea (35%), with Panicum dichotomiflorum (5%), Panicum verrucosum (3%), Xyris jupicai (2%) and 20% bare soil and sand. The third zone (A3) forms a band between 15 and 50 feet wide and is dominated by Panicum verrucosum (35%), with dried Sphagnum sp. (20%), Rhexia mariana (15%), Panicum dichotomiflorum (3%), Xyris jupicai (3%), 10% bare soil and 20% litter and duff. Distribution within each zone is relatively homogeneous, with denser patches of Rhexia mariana in the outer zone. Soil is loamy sand, pH 3.8, overlying silty clay of the Wildwood Member. No standing water, but soil appeared moist in the central zone on survey date. Full sun exposure with very gentle slope (0-3ยบ). A good amount of sand is visible on the soil surface.
NOTE: Although the whole 2.5-acre pond was mapped for this occurrence, Rhexia virginica - Panicum verrucosum Herbaceous Vegetation occupies approximately 0.3 acres of the pond. This pond (South of Green Swamp) is locally called Bucks Folly. Owner says water table is much lower now than when he was a child, seventy years or so ago. A nearby dug pond may have called the change in hydrology.
