Location Narrative |
From Hampton Rd. at Hampton Furnace, cross Batsto Creek and continue 1.1 miles. Turn right towards High Crossing. Park at railroad tracks and follow tracks S about 200'. Ponds are adjacent to tracks on the N side.

Community Type: coastal plain pond (Eleocharis spp., Eriocaulon sp., Xyris sp. community)
Community Description: Deepest water community within coastal plain intermittent pond. This one large area is only found on the S side of the western, larger pond. Dominant species are Eleocharis spp. (E. robbinsii, E. microcarpa, E. olivacea), Xyris smalliana (possibly others), and Eriocaulon sp. Area was flooded at the time of the visit with ~20-27 cm of standing water. Other species noted were Utricularia sp. (floating bladders only), Juncus pelocarpus, Proserpinaca pectinata, and a few Juncus canadensis. This community is surrounded by a Juncus canadensis / Cladium mariscoides community.
