Community Type: coastal plain pond
General Description: Coastal plain intermittent pond within mixed evergreen-deciduous lowland forest, about 400 feet south of a wetland drained by a manmade channel flowing north into Morses Mill Stream. The area is relatively flat, underlain by sand of the Cohansey Formation. Rhexia virginica - Panicum verrucosum Herbaceous Vegetation dominates two patches (A1, A2) in the southern upper zone of the pond. It is surrounded by a Carex striata var. brevis-dominated zone (A3), with Sphagnum cuspidatum and Drosera intermedia. Two sparsely vegetated central patches (A4) are dominated by Carex sp., with Eriocaulon aquaticum, Panicum verrucosum, Xyris smalliana, Scleria reticularis, Dichanthelium sp., Eleocharis olivacea, Drosera intermedia and Proserpinaca pectinata. There are patches of Cladium mariscoides throughout the Carex zone and Chamaedaphne calyculata in the upper zone. The pond is surrounded by a 30-40 feet wide band (A5) dominated by Chamaecyparis thyoides and Vaccinium corymbosum, with Sphagnum cuspidatum, Gaylussacia dumosa, Smilax glauca and Acer rubrum. This is surrounded by mixed evergreen-deciduous lowland forest. The pond is located in forested wetlands on the campus of Richard Stockton College, about 800 feet west of the Garden State Parkway. The suburbs of the town of Pomona are about 3000 feet to the south. There appears to be no current anthropogenic disturbance to the pond, though its hydrology may have been affected by sand excavation in a large (2000 x 80 feet) pit that lies 200 feet east of the site, as well as regional drawdown of the water table.
Community Description: Band of Chamaecyparis thyoides ~10-15 m wide surrounding the coastal plain pond. Ericaceous shrubs and moss grow in the understory. There is a sharp transition from the adjacent herbaceous zone and a jump in elevation. Some hummocks sit 1.5-2" above the elevation of the herbaceous area, though depressions within this woody zone do not appear much higher. Sphagnum can be seen in some depressions, mostly adjacent to the herbaceous area, and other mosses and lichens grow at the base of trees and shrubs and scattered throughout the ground.
