Community Type: coastal plain pond
General Description: Coastal plain intermittent pond within mixed evergreen-deciduous lowland forest. The surrounding landscape is relatively flat, characterized by herbaceous and forested wetlands with agricultural fields occupying slightly higher elevations along a peninsula surrounded by tidal marshlands. Underlying soil is silty clay of the Wildwood Member, though the pond has a sand rim. Rhexia virginica - Panicum verrucosum Herbaceous Vegetation dominates the central to middle zones of the pond. The adjacent upper woody zone is dominated in some areas by a wide band of shrubs, while other areas transition directly to forest. Dominant species are Vaccinium corymbosum, Clethra alnifolia, Leucothoe racemosa, Acer rubrum and Nyssa sylvatica, with Liquidambar styraciflua, Sphagnum cuspidatum, Diospyros virginiana, Quercus lyrata, Ilex opaca and Panicum verrucosum. A paved road lies about 300 feet east of the site and agricultural fields lie about 2000 feet to the north and south. The pond lies within Dix Wildlife Management Area, with little anthropogenic disturbance in the surrounding buffer.
Community Description: Excellent quality herbaceous pondshore community occurring in the central to middle zones of a coastal plain intermittent pond. Dominant species is Panicum verrucosum (50%), with Fimbristylis autumnalis (15%), Sphagnum cuspidatum (10%), Eleocharis olivacea (8%), Panicum dichotomiflorum (1%), Cephalanthus occidentalis (1%) and less than 1% Hypericum mutilum and Rhexia sp. Panicum verrucosum is distributed throughout the area with patches of the other species scattered throughout. Dead trees, a few small tress and a few shrubs are found in the center of this area with a Sphagnum understory. One patch of F. autumnalis occupies the lowest point of the pond, where elevation drops relatively abruptly in the northern quarter of the pond, while the rest of the area is relatively flat. Downed wood makes up 12% of 15% unvegetated surface cover. Soil is silt loam, pH 4.0, overlying silty clay of the Wildwood Member. Full sun exposure with no standing water on survey date.
Community Description (field): Herbaceous zone of coastal plain pond, currently dry and dominated by Panicum verrucosum. Sphagnum sp., Fimbristylis autumnalis, and Eleocharis olivacea are found in large patches under the Panicum. One patch is nearly a monoculture of Fimbristylis in the N (at the lowest elevation).
NOTE: Although the whole 2-acre pond was mapped for this occurrence, Rhexia virginica – Panicum verrucosum Herbaceous Vegetation occupies approximately 0.6 acres of the pond.
