Landscape Narrative |
Average Soil Texture: mineral - loamy sand, pH at 15.24 cm = 3.8
Geology: aeolian (sand rim)
General Landscape Description: 0.6-acre pondshore community in excellent condition within a 1-acre floristically diverse coastal plain intermittent pond surrounded by young pitch pine-oak-heath forest. Survey site is located in a mixed evergreen and deciduous forest. The terrain is very flat and sandy. The forest is very open, in general, with low shrubs (<3' on average). As you approach the coastal plain pond, the forest cover thins and the shrub layer reaches 6-9', forming a much denser thicket. The aerial photo indicates standing water around the pond, increasing as you head NW toward Mattix Run. The surrounding area is being developed. A new road has been built N of Galloway Rd. since the 1993 aerial imagery. A new housing development is being built near Collins Rd. (now Sylvan Lane). Sounds of construction come from every direction. A school is found to the N, <1 mile away, as well as an adjacent housing development. The surrounding woodland has 30-50% Pinus cover with some Nyssa, Quercus and Acer rubrum. Vaccinium spp. and Clethra cover the ground reaching only ~3-4' in height. Also found are Kalmia angustifolia, brackenfern, dewberry, Gaultheria, and Smilax glauca.

Observation Narrative |
Community Type: coastal plain pond
General Description: Coastal plain intermittent pond within pine-oak woodland, just east of Mattix Run (about 2000 feet from the main branch and 1000 feet from the headwaters of a tributary). Surrounding landscape is very flat, underlain by sand of the Cohansey Formation. Rhexia virginica - Panicum verrucosum Herbaceous Vegetation dominates the pond. A moat that may have had Sphagnum lies between the Rhexia-Panicum zone and surrounding shrub zone on the southwestern edge of the pond. The surrounding shrub and small tree zone (A2) is dominated by Acer rubrum, with Nyssa sylvatica, Vaccinium corymbosum, Kalmia angustifolia, Leucothoe racemosa, Clethra alnifolia, Ilex glabra, Sphagnum sp., Photinia pyrifolia, Lyonia mariana and Magnolia virginiana. Forest extends west to Mattix Run and 1200-2000 feet in other directions, but the surrounding area is being developed. A new road has been built north or Galloway Road since the 1995 aerial imagery was taken. A new housing development is being built near Collins Road (now called Sylvan Road). There is a school to the north less than a mile and residential area to the east. A landfill lies about 1200 feet southeast of the site, within the Oceanville Bog priority site (B3).
Community Description: Excellent quality herbaceous pondshore community occurring in the central to upper zones of a coastal plain intermittent pond. Community occurrence is dominated by Panicum verrucosum (45%), with patches of Carex striata var. brevis (25%), and scattered Dichanthelium sp. (10%), Scleria reticularis (8%), Rhynchospora chalarocephala (5%), Viola lanceolata (3%), Euthamia graminifolia (1%), Rhexia sp. (1%), Amphicarpum purshii (1%) and less than 1% Drosera intermedia, Proserpinaca pectinata, Fimbristylis autumnalis, Polygonum sp. and Panicum virgatum. Seven % unvegetated surface cover is 6% litter and duff and 1% downed wood. Loamy sand soil, pH 3.8, overlying sand of the Cohansey Formation. No standing water. Full sun exposure with somewhat pronounced slope (3-6º).
Community Description (field): Open pond area dominated by Panicum verrucosum and Carex striata var. brevis in large patches with other species scattered throughout. There is no standing water in the center, which appears to have the lowest elevation, but there are patches of open soil along the south edge, perhaps due to shade of adjacent shrubs. The lowest asrea supports Scleria reticularis and many seedlings of Viola lanceolata.
Fauna: red-tailed hawk, box turtle, dragonflies, caterpillars
Note: Although the whole 1-acre pond was mapped for this occurrence, Rhexia virginica - Panicum verrucosum Herbaceous Vegetation occupies approximately 0.6 acres of the pond.
